Esta iglesia se construyó, por orden de los Reyes Católicos, a partí de 1485 cuando conquistaron Ronda. Se escogió una mezquita y se la transformó en altura para adaptarla a su nueva función de iglesia mayor de la ciudad. Es de estilo gótico-renacentista, contrafuertes exteriores rematados en pináculos renacentistas, fachada sobria con un frontón triangular con un óculo como única.

A caballo entre los siglos XV y XVI, sus obras se iniciaron en el año 1485 y finalizaron en 1505 .
